Shallow slab or full basement for your house?
The slope of your lot, the space you want below and how deep we have to dig decide this, and they also move the price and schedule most. Your written estimate spells it out.
A shallow slab is enough when:
- Your lot is fairly flat
- You don't need space below
- You'd rather skip deep digging
- The edge can be insulated properly
- A simpler dig suits the budget
A basement is the better choice when:
- Your lot slopes steeply
- You want livable space below
- You need room for storage
- The deeper dig fits your budget
- Drainage can be planned around it

A site visit set up
I walk the lot with you
I come out myself, look over the site with you and listen to what you have in mind. We talk about where the house sits and how water moves across the lot.
A plan for the foundation
Your written estimate
You get a written estimate that spells out what's included, from the digging and footings to the drainage and any radon protection we've planned with you.
A written estimate
Permits and a start date
Before we set a date, I check with your local office about permits. Inside Holland, the city's plan review may take 2 to 4 weeks, so we plan the start around it.
A planned start date
Ground work, pour and walk-through
Our own crew prepares the ground before any concrete goes down, with me on site, and we clean up when we're done. Then we walk the work with you and explain how to look after it.

What our foundation installation includes
Layout on the lot
We stake out the foundation to match your plans, so it sits exactly where it should on the lot.
Digging and the subgrade
We dig to the planned depth and pack the subgrade, the soil everything sits on, so it doesn't settle later.
Footings first
We pour concrete footings sized and set as your plans call for, so the walls start on a solid, even base.
Walls or a thickened-edge slab
We form and pour the walls or slab with rebar, the steel inside that helps the concrete carry weight and hold together.
Drains and grading
We set the foundation drains and shape the soil to fall away from the house as part of the same job.
Radon protection, if you want it
We build a radon-resistant system in while the foundation goes in, rather than leaving it for a fix later.
What decides the cost of a new foundation?
The biggest thing that moves the cost is the kind of foundation you choose. A basement means deeper digging and more concrete, though that cost buys you a comfortable room you can use, while a shallow slab or a sealed crawlspace needs less digging. After that, the size and shape of the house, the slope of the lot, how easily trucks can reach it and the time of year all play a part.
If the budget needs trimming, I'd rather it came off something you can change later than off the drains, the packed ground or the footings, because once the walls are backfilled nobody can see them or easily fix them. Radon protection works the same way, since building it in during construction costs much less than fixing a radon problem found later.
Why Holland homeowners trust us with foundations
I started out pouring walks and steps for neighbors, and concrete has been my main work since 2021. I come out and write your estimate myself, and our own crew does the work with me on site. Most of our calls come from homeowners in Holland and the cities around it, and some from small business owners planning a building and its concrete parking lot.
High radon levels have been found in every county in Michigan, and about one in four Michigan homes have them, whether the house sits on a slab, a basement or a crawlspace. That's why we talk through the foundation type with you before anything is dug, and plan the drainage and any radon protection along with it, not after.

(616) 801-4861Foundation questions we hear often
How much does a new foundation cost in Holland, MI?
I give you that figure in a written estimate after I've seen the lot, because the kind of foundation, the size of the house and how deep we dig change it more than anything else. The estimate spells out what's included, so you can compare it fairly with others.
What is the best foundation for a cold Michigan winter?
Any of the three can work, as long as freezing soil can't heave under the walls, since that's what cracks them and pushes them out of line. A basement or crawlspace does this with footings at or below the frost line. A frost-protected shallow slab has a thickened edge as its footing, with rigid insulation at the edge and spreading outward, and it does the same without deep digging when it's detailed properly.
How do I keep the space below my house dry?
Start outside, because most foundation moisture problems come from poor drainage around the house, so the ground should slope away and a drainage system should go in with the foundation. For crawlspaces, one building-science firm advises building them like small basements, closed to outside air with insulated, air-sealed walls and the ground vapor sealed, since vented crawlspaces are often damp, moldy and home to pests.
Do I need a permit for a new foundation in Holland, MI?
If your address is inside the City of Holland, please ask the city's Community & Neighborhood Services office before you count on a date, because its permit list names new houses, additions, flat concrete work and structural repairs but doesn't name foundation installation by itself. An application includes a survey or an accurate site plan showing property lines, existing buildings and where the new work goes, since the city checks placement on the lot against its zoning rules, and it goes to City Hall or to permits@cityofholland.com. We can file the application for you or help you with it.
Can you pour a concrete foundation in winter?
Yes. Concrete poured when the air is at or below 40°F, or expected to drop there, can still reach the strength and durability it needs when it's properly mixed, placed and protected. The colder it gets, the more protection the pour needs, so a winter job takes more planning than a summer one.
Does a foundation contractor need a license in Michigan?
Yes, the state licenses anyone who builds a home for pay beyond wages for their own labor, and the same goes for repairing, altering, adding to or improving one. We're licensed and insured, and I'm happy to show you that before you decide.
