Holland Concrete Company handles concrete work for homeowners and small business owners, and we take our time on the ground underneath, because that part decides how well the surface holds up.

Our concrete services

Every job's price turns on its size, the ground underneath and the finish you pick, and the schedule on permits and weather, so your written estimate from the site visit spells out yours.

  • We dig out soft ground, pack a firm base and pour a new driveway, with control joints cut in so any cracks follow lines we chose.

  • Want a place for a grill and chairs out back? We build concrete patios on a packed base, shaped to shed rain away from your house.

  • We press patterns and color into fresh concrete so it looks like stone, brick or slate, a good fit for patios and walks where looks matter.

  • We pour new walks to your front door, side gate or back yard with a broom finish, a light swept texture that helps shoes grip when it's wet.

  • A cracked or chipping garage floor is hard to sweep and park on. We pour a new slab on a packed base, sloped to drain toward the door.

  • What else can concrete look like? We add color, exposed stone, scored patterns and other finishes for homes and businesses that want more than plain gray.

  • We build poured retaining walls that hold back a slope or level a yard, with rebar, steel bars set inside, to help carry the soil's weight.

  • For basements, workshops and small commercial spaces, we pour interior floors finished smooth, so they're easy to clean or ready for a covering later.

  • A pool deck sees wet feet and summer sun, so we pour it with a texture that grips and a slope that drains water away from the pool.

  • We form and pour front, back and side steps with even risers, so each step is the same height and nobody catches a toe on an odd one.

  • Garages, additions and outbuildings sit on a slab foundation. We pour it on a packed subgrade, the ground beneath it, so the building starts on firm footing.

  • For a new home, addition or small commercial building, we form and pour foundation walls on solid footings, following the plans your project is built from.

  • Small business owners call us for concrete parking lots poured thick enough for daily traffic, with the drainage planned so water doesn't pool where customers park.

  • Footings are the wide bases under walls, posts and porches that spread weight into the soil. We dig and pour them to the depth your plans call for.

  • When a slab or part of a foundation has sunk, we look for the cause first, then lift and support it to bring it back toward level.

  • Need an opening, a trench or a clean edge for new work? We saw-cut existing concrete so only the part that has to go comes out.

    Care instructions

Careful work from the ground up

I started out pouring walks, patios and steps for neighbors on weekends, and in 2021 the calls were steady enough to make concrete my main work. I learned the trade one job at a time, and I still learn from people who've done it far longer than I have.

We're best known for flatwork, the driveways, patios, walks and steps you use every day, and we also pour walls, foundations and floors for homes and small businesses. Most of our calls come from Holland and the cities around it, including Zeeland and Grand Rapids, and if your city isn't named on the site, please ask.

I'd rather tell you plainly what to expect from your new concrete than make a promise concrete can't keep, and I'd rather give you a careful answer than a fast one. If you'd like to know more, please read about our business.

Before you hire

A few plain things to weigh before you hire anyone for concrete, so you can read bids side by side and know what to ask at the estimate.

  • What shapes the cost

Size, base work and finish set most of the price. On a tight budget, cut the fancy finish before the base, because the base decides how the slab holds up.

  • Repair it or replace it

Small cracks and chips can often be repaired, but a slab that's sinking, heaving or pooling water usually has a base problem, and patching the top won't fix that.

  • Plain or decorative finish

Plain broom-finished concrete is the practical choice for driveways and walks. Stamped and colored finishes cost more and need sealing now and then, so they suit patios best.

  • Questions to ask a contractor

Ask how deep they'll dig, how they'll pack the base, where the water will run and when they'll cut the control joints. Vague answers usually mean a shortcut.

How we treat your property in Holland

You'll deal with me from the first visit to the final walkthrough, so the person who quoted your job is the one who sees it through. When I explain a job, I go over what we'll dig out, how water will run off the new slab and what you'll need to do while it cures.

We treat your yard and your time with care, keeping the work area tidy and cleaning up when we finish. I'd also rather wait for the right conditions to pour than rush, because concrete poured in midday heat can dry too fast and leave a weak, dusty top.

Please ask me anything about your job. You'll get a plain answer, and if something can't be known until we dig, I'll say so.

Tell us about your concrete job

Please tell us what you'd like done, its rough size and your city. We reply within one business day, and I'll come out for a free on-site estimate with no obligation.

Questions people ask about concrete

Straight answers to what callers ask most, from cost and drying time to permits in Holland, so you can plan before I come out to look.

How much does a new concrete driveway cost in Holland, MI?

It depends mostly on the size, how much digging and base work your ground needs, whether an old slab has to come out and the finish you choose, so I give you a figure only after seeing the site. Access matters too, since a tight backyard can mean more work by hand than an open front driveway.

Why are concrete quotes so different from one contractor to the next?

Most of the difference is usually in the work you can't see, like how deep each contractor digs, how well they pack the base and whether removal and haul-away are included. Our written estimate lists what's included and what isn't, so you can line bids up fairly.

How long until I can drive on a new concrete driveway?

Usually about a week before you park on it, and a day or two before you walk on it, though cool weather can stretch both. That wait is curing, the time concrete needs to gain strength, and I'll give you the dates for your slab at the walkthrough.

Do concrete contractors need a license in Michigan?

Michigan requires anyone building a residential structure to hold a Residential Builder license, with certain exceptions, and that license is held with the state's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. For our part, we're licensed and insured, and you're welcome to ask any contractor for proof before you hire.

What do you do to the ground before pouring concrete?

We dig out the soft soil, bring in base material and pack it firm, because a base that's only raked level settles with the dirt and takes the slab with it. Before we pour, we also check where water will run, so the slab sheds it away from your house instead of toward it.

Do you guarantee your concrete work, and will it crack?

Our work comes with one plain promise, your satisfaction, guaranteed. I won't tell you concrete never cracks, because nobody honestly can, but we cut the control joints on time so any cracks tend to follow the lines we chose.

Is a thicker concrete slab always better?

Not always, because thickness should match what the slab carries, and even a thick slab will crack and sink on a soft base. A driveway needs more than a patio, and rebar or wire mesh can help hold cracks tight, so I'll tell you at the estimate what your job needs.

Do I need a permit for concrete work in Holland, MI?

It may, so we check with the City of Holland before we set a date, and we can file the application for you or help you with it. The city's residential applications include one for driveways and paving, and its Community & Neighborhood Services office takes questions at 616-355-1330. Plan review may take 2 to 4 weeks once plans are submitted, and work in the Historic District may also need a Certificate of Appropriateness.
