Patch your pool deck or pour a new one?
If the slab is still level and the cracks are few, a repair usually holds, but once panels sink or the top flakes across the deck, new concrete is the better buy.
A repair is enough when:
- Cracks are few and fine
- The panels sit level with each other
- The top hasn't flaked or worn through
- Water still runs off the right way
- The coping joint only needs fresh caulk
A new deck is better when:
- Panels have sunk or tipped
- Cracks run across many panels
- The surface flakes across the deck
- Water runs toward the house or pool
- The coping is cracking or chipping
- You want a new shape or finish
How your pool deck comes together
You call, I come out
When you call (616) 801-4861 or send the form, I come out myself to look at the pool and the ground around it, and to listen to what you have in mind.
A site visit
Your written estimate
You get a written estimate that spells out what's included, so you can see exactly what the job covers before you decide anything.
A written estimate
Permits, then a date
We check with your city's office about permits before we set a date. In Holland, plan review may take 2 to 4 weeks once the application is in, so we plan around that wait.
A start date
Ground first, then the pour
Our crew digs out and packs the base and lays out the joints around the curves and drains before any forms go in, then we pour and finish with me on site.
A finished deck
Walk-through and clean-up
When the deck is finished, we clean up, walk it with you and explain how to look after it while it cures and in the years after.

What our concrete pool deck work includes
Taking out the old deck
We break up the old concrete and haul it away, so the new deck starts on clean ground.
A dug-out, packed base
We dig out and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, so the deck doesn't settle with the dirt later.
Planning around the pool
The coping, skimmers, drains, equipment pads and pipes are worked out before the forms go in, so everything fits together.
Joints around curves and drains
We lay out control joints, cut lines that give the concrete a planned place to crack, to follow the deck's curves and drains.
A finish that grips
A broom finish drags fine ridges across the top that give wet toes something to hold, and grip always comes first when we choose.
Curing and clean-up
We give the slab time to cure, the wait while it gains strength before use, and leave the yard tidy.
What shapes the cost of a pool deck?
Size and shape come first, because curves and odd corners take more forming and more joints than a plain rectangle. Taking out an old deck, firming up soft ground and getting equipment into a fenced backyard all add work. The finish matters as well, since a broom finish costs less than exposed aggregate or a decorative top. Steps down to the yard through our concrete steps construction, or a pad for a pool house through our slab foundation building, add to the job too.
If the budget is tight, I'd keep the base and trim the finish, because a fancy top on poorly packed ground will settle and crack, while a plain top on a good base can be dressed up later. The schedule turns on the city's permit review, the weather and the curing, and your written estimate spells out what's included.
Why Holland homeowners call us for pool decks
We're best known for flatwork, the driveways, patios, walks and steps people use every day, and a pool deck is flatwork that has to grip under wet, bare feet. I care most that the work underneath is right, because nobody can see it once the concrete is in. I'll tell you plainly what to expect, and our own crew does the work with me on site.
We're licensed and insured. In Michigan, each license lists the trades its holder may practice, so please ask to see ours and look for concrete on it. Your satisfaction, guaranteed. If you'd like us to look at your deck, please call (616) 801-4861 or use the form below.

(616) 801-4861Pool deck questions we hear
Which concrete finish is safest for a pool deck with wet, bare feet?
A textured finish, such as a broom finish, gives wet feet more to grip than a smooth one, which is why slip resistance should be the first thing you weigh. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coated, overlay and decorative finishes differ in grip and in how hot they get, and very dark ones grow uncomfortable in the sun. I'm happy to talk through which suits your pool when I come out.
What causes a concrete pool deck to crack?
Most cracks start where the concrete had no planned line to move along, and narrow, irregular panels crack most easily. Joints should be laid out around the curves, drains, corners and the deck's shape, and we lay ours out before any forms go in. If your deck is curved or an unusual shape, please ask to see the joint layout before work starts.
How do I make a concrete pool deck last through Michigan winters?
Start with concrete that has air mixed into it, because that air helps a soaked slab hold up through freezing and thawing and limits flaking from ice-melt chemicals. Heavy-handed finishing can damage this kind of concrete in a climate like ours, so it's fair to ask any crew how they finish the surface.
Do I need a permit for a pool deck in Holland, MI?
For a home inside the city, most likely yes, because the City of Holland lists pool, deck and flat concrete work on private property among the work that needs a permit, and its Community & Neighborhood Services office takes the applications. The city calls that list a general guideline and asks you to check with the office at 616-355-1330, and it wants a survey or accurate site plan showing property lines, existing buildings, dimensions and where the new work goes. We check with your city's office before we set a date, and we can file the application for you or help you with it.
How do I keep my concrete pool deck in good shape?
Check the joint between the deck and the coping, the cap along the pool's edge, once a year, and replace the caulk when it cracks, pulls away or wears out, as one coping maker advises. That maker calls for a gap with flexible sealant there, so movement from heat, settling and freeze-thaw doesn't push on the coping and chip it, and most rubbery caulks last five to ten years. If your deck has an acrylic sealer, it wears away by design in 1 to 3 years and is meant to be reapplied.
How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Holland, MI?
Across the US, an installed concrete pool deck usually costs about $10.10 to $12.40 per square foot. That's a national figure rather than our price, and your own cost depends on the deck's size and shape, the old deck coming out, the base and the finish you choose. Your figure comes in the written estimate after I've seen the site.
